European Heritage Label

The European Heritage Label is an EU initiative that has honored sites of special European significance – historically or symbolically – under updated criteria.

Culture strengthens the common European identity

Since 2011, the European Union has been awarding the European Heritage Label (EHL) to European cultural monuments, cultural landscapes, cultural sites, and memorials. Sites eligible for this distinction are those that symbolically and exemplarily represent European integration as well as the ideals and history of Europe or the European Union and express this significance through appropriate activities.

The aim of the initiative is to strengthen the sense of belonging of European citizens to the EU and its shared values and to facilitate access to European cultural heritage. A video explains this in detail.

Across Europe, 67 sites have so far been awarded the European Heritage Label, including the following in Germany:

Procedure for Awarding the Label

Each EU Member State may submit up to two applications to the European Commission every two years. However, under current EU regulations, only one of the two sites may be awarded the label. The selection process takes place in two stages:
