European Capital of Culture

“European Capital of Culture” is a title awarded by the EU. Oulu (Finland) and Trenčín (Slovakia) are the European Capitals of Culture for 2026

The program was launched in 1985 on the initiative of Greek Minister of Culture Melina Mercouri. For each European Capital of Culture, €1.5 million is allocated from the EU cultural funding program Creative Europe. General information about the EU program and the European Capitals of Culture is published on the website of the European Commission.

A contribution to emphasizing the shared cultural heritage in Europe

The initiative “European Capitals of Culture” aims to:

  • Highlight the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe
  • Emphasize the cultural characteristics shared by all Europeans
  • Strengthen the sense of belonging of European citizens to a common cultural space
  • Promote the contribution of culture to the development of cities
